Meat Merchants’Association Worries to Lose Abattoir

Mangalore, November1, 2009: The Meat Merchants’ Association of Dakshina Kannada has declared that it is going to organize an indefinite protest if either the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) or the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) attempts to shut down the abattoir at Kudroli, which supplies meat to more than 100 meat stalls in Dakshina Kannada. 

President of the Meat Merchants’ Association of DK Ali Hassan said that the Supreme Court had ordered the KSPCB to provide an alternative site for the abattoir before shutting it down. He said that, in spite of being granted a period of 18 months to find an alternative spot for an abattoir, the KSPCB has still not made any move to do so. 

Mr. Hassan accused the BJP-led state government as well as the Sangh Parivar of being responsible for this delay in finding an alternative spot for the abattoir. He accused the Sangh Parivar of attempting to inconvenience the members of the Muslim community who either include meat in their diets or have taken up meat trade for a living. 

But MCC Commissioner K N Vijayprakash told press people that an abattoir with the latest facilities will be constructed at Pachanady, a project that would last a couple of years.
