City to get Rs. 100 crore for UGD network expansion

Mangaluru, Mar 23, 2015 : Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake on Sunday said the government has accorded permission for an Asian Development Bank loan of Rs. 100 crore for the Mangaluru City Corporation and Rs. 30 crore for the Puttur City Municipal Council to undertake underground drainage works.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for a comprehensive drinking water project for Bantwal town here, Mr. Sorake said that areas so far not covered by UGD in these two cities would be covered with the network under second phase of ADB assisted works.

The Rs. 52.79-crore drinking water project for Bantwal, to be executed by Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board, would get completed in two years, he said. The Minister said the government is considering proposals to sanction drinking water projects for Sullia and Belthangadi towns and UGD for Moodbidri and Bantwal.

Towards rejuvenating water bodies in urban areas, his department would closely work with the Forest Department and improve tanks in the limits of towns and cities, he said. Presiding over the function, District in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai said the government had approved many schemes for Bantwal town and taluk. While the foundation stone for a KSRTC bus stand at B.C. Road would be laid in a fortnight, the Bantwal town would come to have two parks, he said.

Earlier, Minister for Higher Education R.V. Deshpande inaugurated the new building constructed at a cost of Rs. 8 crore for government polytechnic and ladies’ hostel built at a cost of Rs. 1 crore for the polytechnic at Bantwal.
