Strategy to clamp down on illegal religious structures

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Oct 17, 2014:  With nearly 1,600 religious structures being identified as illegally built on government land, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has chalked out a strategy that includes both demolitions and social boycotts to ensure the property are reclaimed.

At a district-level meeting of the committee to oversee the clearing of illegal religious structures here on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim was told that only minor structures such as donation boxes on the sides of the roads had been removed, while major structures were “difficult” to demolish.

In response, Mr. Ibrahim said that the tahsildars and nodal officers should take the initiative to ensure that “there is no growth to the illegal religious structures”.
