Manipal, Aug 28, 2014:   A press release issued by the KMC hospital stated that 21-year old ’Shanthi’ was suffering from palpitation and breathlessness.

She was evaluated by doctors Tom Devasia and Hashir Kareem of the cardiology department and further investigations were carried out. The findings were suggestive of ventricular septal defect, a hole in the heart, which is essentially a congenital defect between the two major chambers of the heart.

The echocardiogram confirmed the size of the hole to be around 20 mm which is very unusual.

This made the flow of blood abnormal with pure and impure blood mixing from left side to right side of the heart. The doctors at Kasturba Hospital here have successfully operated a patient with a rare congenital heart deformity.
