MSF International Volunteer interacts at Yenepoya University

Mangalore, July 23, 2014: Dr Alan De Lima Pereira, an International Volunteer with "MSF - Medicins Sans Frontiers" (Doctors without borders) was at Yenepoya University to share his experience of working with MSF in conflict areas like South Sudan and Ethiopia where healthcare was extended with limited resources.  Ms Monika JP, India Resource for MSF New Delhi office accompanied Dr Alan Pereira and they interacted with MBBS students, Post graduates in the discipline of Community Medicine, Faculty and invitees. The session was organized under the National Service Scheme, Yenepoya University.

Dr Alan spoke on how ’Kala-azar’ a disease not so common in India is rampant in areas of Africa. He urged young medical graduates to take a path less travelled instead of just a comfortable job as is common at present.

Ms Monika JP highlighted how MSF responds during disasters and also in areas where health care remains inaccessible due to lack of socio-political will and human resources.

Several questions were raised in the interaction by Dr R P Pai, Professor, Dept of Community Medicine, Yenepoya University, who was also former Consultant WHO-SEARO, which provided a deeper insight.

Dr Ashwini Shetty, NSS coordinator and Faculty, Dept of Anatomy co-ordinated the proceedings for the day. Dr Edmond Fernandes, Post Graduate, Dept of Community Medicine, Yenepoya University delivered the Vote of thanks.
