DRI team confiscates illegal MoP at Mangalore Port

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Jan, 26: A Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) team confiscated 5 containers of export cargo at NMPT on Jan 25, Monday. These export containers, originally from Hassan, were labeled Bentonite Powder. The material was to be exported to Malaysia.

The containers had successfully passed through customs and were waiting to the shipped to Malaysia. The DRI team had the containers opened at NMP and discovered that the containers did not contain Bentonite Powder as the labels stated. Instead, they contained Muriate of Potash or MoP, which is a fertilizer that is not supposed to be exported. The value of the fertilizer seized is estimated to be Rs 45 lakh.

MoP is supplied to farmers at subsidized rates. The DRI team suspects that the MoP meant for the use of farmers is being taken to make profits. The team registered a case, which is currently being investigated.

This is the first major indication of smuggling at the New Mangalore Port.
