60 Cases of Missing Women in DK Alone

26 October 2009

The circle inspectors and sub-inspectors of DK, Kodagu, Udupi, Hassan, Mysore, and Bangalore districts were called for a meeting in Mangalore on October 24, Saturday. Gopal Hosur, the inspector general of police (western range) later informed that, in DK alone, there are 60 cases of missing women between the ages of 18 - 35. These women are yet to be traced. Hosur said that all the missing person cases registered in DK police stations will be reopened and reviewed for any link to the serial killer case.

He informed that some of these girls had later called up their families and assured them that they were alright. The police are especially investigating cases in which the bodies of women were discovered in toilets of bus stands. Mr. Hosur also said that the railway authorities have been asked to furnish details of dead women found in railway toilets. The Karnataka Police have also contacted the Kerala Police regarding this case.

Inspector Rajanna of Mysore, who attended the meeting, provided details of 12 women discovered dead in the toilets of KSRTC bus stands. Mohan Kumar has confessed that he has killed 5 of them. Hosur said that the other seven cases will be investigated. The IGP also informed that steps have been taken to discover details of the ornaments stolen and sold by Mohan.

In response to reporters’ questions about police inefficiency with regard to investigation despite the fact that bodies of dead women were being found regularly in toilets of bus stands, the IGO responded that the killer did not leave behind any trace. Moreover, police offers get transferred frequently, and this hinders progress. Simultaneously, the department would take steps to find out if there are any flaws in the investigative mechanism. A report would be prepared and submitted to the higher officials, along with recommendations for better investigative machinery.

He added that the police would gather as much evidence as possible to ensure a verdict of death sentence against Mohan Kumar.
