Prohibitory order in Mangalore

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore Dec 5: Dakshina Kannada district will be under prohibitory order for 3 days from Dec 5, 2009, in order to preserve communal peace and harmony. The authorities concerned issued this order because a number of organizations were planning to organize rallies, public meetings, and programmes in observation of the anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid on Dec 6.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Mr. Prabhakar Sharma said that Dakshina Kannada, and particularly Mangalore, is very susceptible to communal tensions. Therefore, a prohibitory order has been passed preventing all rallies, speeches, programmes, and public meetings in Mangalore. Government programmes, however, are exempted.

Several organizations were planning to hold rallies, meetings, and programmes in the city. While members of one community wanted to observe Dec 6 as a day of joy, members of another community wanted to observe it as a Black Day. Now, owing to the prohibitory order, they can do nothing.
