In his inaugural speech, Ltn Serrao shared his experiences during the Bhopal Gas Tragedy of 1984. He said that many are still suffering from various defects caused by the tragedy. Although the authorities issued more than 3 lakh health cards, nobody received any medical benefits. The case filed against the company is now almost non-existent. After signing a pact with the company, the government conveniently forgot the sorry plight of the victims of the tragedy. He said that people are not getting any government facilities; moreover, the effects of this terrible incident will be felt by the future generations too.

He also said that all responsible citizens must fight for their rights and for the benefits that they rightfully deserve. One must avoid wasting time blaming the government. Everybody must get involved in social work and fight social injustice. Only then can we move forward as a nation and bid good-bye to corruption.

Walter Stephen Mendes, the chairman of the Western Institute of Technology, presided over the function. Balakrishna, the retired deputy general manager of MCF, and DV Venkatraman, the retired DGM of MCF, were the resource persons.
