16-year-old Drowns at Panambur Beach

17 October 2009

Ramanath Mallya (16), a student of I PUC at SVS College Bantwal, drowned at Panambur beach on October 15, Thursday.

He was one of the 11 students from SVS College Bantwal who had arrived at Panambur beach to celebrate the last working day of their college just before the mid-term vacation. The powerful waves of the sea pulled in a couple of them; and the life guards succeeded in saving one of them.

The group of students arrived at Panambur beach at 2 p.m. Ramanath Mallya, who was swimming in the sea, got caught by a powerful inner current. His classmate Narasimha Shenoy (16), who rushed to his rescue, also got into trouble. In spite of every effort made by the life guards, they were not able to save Mallya.

Ramanath Mallya, son of Srinivas Mallya, a hardware merchant from B C Road, has lost his mother a couple of years back. His body was found at 4:30 p.m. after an intensive search.

A case has been registered at Panambur Police Station.
