Mangalore, Nov 17: Four allegedly Bajarang Dal activists, arrested for assaulting a group of 5 students who were travelling by bus to Mangalore to participate in a sports event, have escaped from Wenlock Hospital.

On Nov 15, Sunday, a group of 5 students from Yedapadav PU College comprising 2 girls along with Rizwan of Addoor, Rashid of Kuppepadav, and Mohammed Sadiq of Kaikamba Kandavar were assaulted by allegedly Bajarang Dal activists. The students were in a bus going to Mangalore when a gang of extremists stopped the bus, ordered the students to get off, and began assaulting the boys for talking to the girls. The incident, which took place in Vamanjur, created a tense atmosphere for a long time.

Sudhakar, Janardhan, Sampath, and Mohan who are accused of assaulting the students got admitted into Wenlock Hospital, claiming that they had been assaulted. Girish, the Panambur deputy superintendent of police (DySP), and Prakash, the sub-inspector of Mangalore rural police station, ordered the immediate arrest of the 4.

Immediately after their arrest, Bajarang Dal leaders Monappa Bhandary and Jagadish Shenava demanded to know how the medical officer of Wenlock Hospital could allow the police to arrest patients who were under their care. The medical officer said that the 4 would be readmitted to the hospital and formally discharged.

On Monday evening, the police brought the 4 back to the hospital. When the hospital was getting ready their discharge papers, they reportedly mingled with a group of Bajarang Dal activists who had gathered there and made good their escape.

DySP Girish has assured that the police would seek out the 4 young men and arrest them once again.
