Mangaluru, Dec 07, 2019:  City MCC civic group filed a contempt petition against Urban  Development Department (UDD) and Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) in the Karnataka High Court in Bangalore on December 6,  Friday, for failing to implement the High Court’s orders on setting up Area Sabhas and Ward Level Committees in all 60 wards of MCC.

On August 8, 2019, the High Court had directed the government to notify Area Sabhas in all 60 Wards of MCC, soon after election process is completed.

The MCC elections were held on November 12 and the results were declared on November 14.

A delegation from the MCC civic group failed to get proper assurance/response after meeting the additional secretary of the Urban Development Department (UDD) Anjum Parvez, in Bangalore and returned empty handed.

“The additional secretary merely sent out letters and was yet to draft the notification,” sources in MCC civic group told media.

As per the KMC Act, every ward across 11 cities of Karnataka (population of 3+lakhs), should have Area Sabha representatives.

“This group now takes up the next challenge  to ensure enough number of Area Sabhas are notified, taking geography and developmental needs in to account and not to give vote bank advantage to local leaders lacking transparency,” said sources in the MCC civic group in the city.
