Students develop concrete blocks from sewage plant residues

Mangaluru, June 2, 2019: A team of final year Civil Engineering students of Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology & Management, Bantakal, developed concrete blocks using residue of sewage treatment plants.

The team comprised Nadumane Mohammed Altaf, Atthawool Rahiman G, Shetty Ashwini and Aparna V Bant, and worked under the guaidance of Assistant Professor Vignesh Shenoy B. The students used residue including sewage sludge and treated waste water from the plants.

“The replacement of treated water for fresh water not only saves the natural water resources but also shows noticeable effects on the strength of concrete. The cement is partially replaced by sewage sludge ash, which will help to reduce the environmental pollution,” said student Mohammed Altaf.

“Further increase in percentage of sludge ash will result in reduction of strength of concrete. Hence, such concrete can be used for the non-structural elements where strength will not be a factor,” explained the students.
