Elections : Ten candidates lose deposits

Udupi, May 27, 2019 : Barring BJP and JD(S)-Congress candidates, all other 10 candidates in Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency have lost their deposits in the Lok Sabha election 2019 held recently.

If BJP and coalition candidates had polled 10,88,233 votes, the remaining 10 candidates had secured a total of 55,269 votes.  According to the guidelines of Election Commission of India, the candidates who get 1/6th of the votes polled are eligible for refund of the deposit paid while submitting the nomination.

The total votes polled in Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency was 11,43,502 (barring NOTA and rejected votes). The candidates should have secured 16.67% of the votes to retain the deposit.

BSP candidate P Parameshwara had secured 15,947 votes and stood third in the list while Congress rebel candidate Amruth Shenoy secured 7,981 votes. That apart P Gautham Prabhu secured--7,431 votes, Abdul Rehman-6,017, K C Prakash-3,543, M K Dayanand-3,539, Maggalamakki Ganesh-3,526, Suresh Kunder-3,488, Vijay Kumar-2,216 and Shekar Havanje-1,581.

In Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency, NOTA has received 7,510 votes, accounting for 0.65% of the votes polled. The constituency-wise break up of votes received under NOTA is as follows--Kundapur has received highest votes at 1,258, followed by Mudigere—1,059, Chikmagalur—960, Udupi—930, Karkala—873, Sringeri—853, Tarikere—809 and Kaup—760. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, the constituency had received 7,828 votes under NOTA. Of the 2,492 postal ballots received, only 1,881 were valid.
