Areas in Central Mangaluru plunge into darkness

Mangaluru, Jan 31, 2019: Power supply in central parts of Mangaluru was affected since Wednesday morning after the 110 kV underground cable from the Sharavathi Receiving Station at Kavoor to Bejai substation got damaged.

Normal supply is expected only by 10 p.m. on Thursday, said a release from MESCOM here.

The release said that workers engaged by Reliance Jio Infotech damaged the cable while executing their work beneath the Kuntikana flyover.

Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. is engaged in restoration works, which would go on till Thursday night, the release said.

Consequently, power supply in Bejai, Kapikad, Anegundi, Kuntikana, Daddalkad, Urvastore, Kodikal, Bharathinagar, Vivekanagar, KSRTC, Attavar, Kadri, Valencia, Infosys, Balmatta, Bunder, Kudroli, Mannugudda, Alake, Hampanakatte and surrounding areas was affected, the release said.

MESCOM Chief Engineer (in-charge) Manjapa said that a cable joint has to come all the way from Chennai as a heavy cable is being used.

Meanwhile, the power supply company is arranging power supply alternatively in the affected areas from other substations, he said.

KPTCL has registered a complaint with the police for the damage caused. It is now estimating the loss due to the damage, he added.

Shivanand, proprietor of Hi-Fone, a mobile phone repair shop at Central Market, said that there has been frequent power disruption since Wednesday morning.

“While there was no power for about four hours, it was restored for about an hour but it again got disrupted,” he said.
