Water for Udupi on alternate days only from March

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, March 01, 2015: The Udupi City Municipal Council is to  supply water to the 35 municipal wards in the city on alternate days only from March 2, the  commissioner informed in a release. The general body meeting of the council was dominated by the issue of drinking water scarcity and the inclusion of nearby gram panchayats into the city.

Leader of the Opposition, said some areas in the city were not receiving water,  claims by the council that there was no water shortage in the Baje dam across the Swarna river were misplaced.  Councillors said there was water scarcity on Court Road, in LIC Colony areas, Old Post Office Road and other  areas of the city.

They added that the council should reduce water supply to the nearby gram panchayats and not provide water for construction activities.  Council president, said the water-level in Baje dam was 5.17 metres now and last year it was 5.1 metres.  Supplying water to all areas on alternate days after studying the situation was the only option. Bhandarkar, councillor, said that the proposal to include five neighbouring gram panchayats into the council should be kept in abeyance as there was no staff, infrastructure or finance for the additional araes.

The Bharatiya Janata Party had opposed the inclusion of neighbouring gram panchayats in writing and it was decided to keep this proposal on hold.  A councillor, said that Manipal University had blocked access to a public road leading to the End Point area. It had also shifted an autorickshaw stand from within the campus of the Manipal Institute of Technology to an area outside the campus without taken permission from the council.

Another councillor said that the university had blocked the road from V.S. Acharya Circle to Vijayanagara area. To this,  the ruling Congress members were behaving like the Opposition party said one.

Kanchan said he had to raise these issues as the Opposition was inactive. This led to heated exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches.
