University College in city to get ’School of Finance and Analytics’

Mangaluru, Oct 13, 2017: Briefing media , former Union minister and Chikkaballapur MP M Veerappa Moily said that School of Finance and Analytics will be opened at University College in Mangaluru, which is celebrating 150 years of its existence.


He said that plans have been chalked out for the setting up of School of Finance and Analytics. “I have spoken to BRICS Bank Chairman K V Kamath, Karnataka Bank Chairman Jayaram Bhat and other bankers from the district. The classes are likely to start from the next academic year. We will also press the government to sanction Rs 50 crore for the purpose,” he said.

A proposal will be prepared to start business incubation centre at University College for the development of entrepreneurship. Nabard, ICICI, HDFCM CRF and others help will be sought in this regard, he added.

The renovation of Ravindra Kala Bhavan building on the premises of the University College will be completed at the earliest. The first programme to mark 150 years of University College will be the inauguration of renovated Ravindra Kala Bhavan either in January or February. The hall in the building had been named after poet Rabindranath Tagore as he visited the college in 1922, he said.

The University Grants Commission had bestowed the ‘special heritage status’ on the college and had sanctioned Rs 1.83 crore under the scheme for the renovation of the Bhavan. Even the Mangalore University has earmarked Rs 67 lakh for the renovation work, Moily said.

He said that the work on the first storey of Dr Dayanand Pai building at the college is in progress and will be completed by February 2018.

Postal stamp  :  Mangalore University Vice Chancellor K Byrappa said postal stamp will be brought out to mark the occasion.

To remember “Father of Library Science in India” Dr S R Ranganathan who had served at University College library between 1917-21, the library of the college will be upgraded and named after him. The library will be digitised with its rare collection of books, he added.

A proposal has been prepared for modernising the playground in the college. A permanent mid-day meal programme will also be introduced at the University College for the benefit of the poor students.

D K Chowta, an alumnus of the college has promised to continue the mid-day meal programme through Old Students’ Association. The celebrate the 150 years of its existence round the year, the Mangalore University will approach Tulu, Kodava, Arebhashe, Yakshagana and other academies to organise workshops, seminars in the college. Konkani Academy President R P Nayaka has already promised to release Rs 5 lakh to organise a national-level seminar, he explained.

The VC said to raise funds to organise various programmes, a musical nite by music director Guru Kiran will be organised. In addition, artist Vilas Nayak will organise an exhibition of his art works.
