June 14, 2017: Inaugurating ’Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight’ organised by the department of health and family welfare, Rotary Club and Lions Club at an anganwadi at Padunittur in Udupi,  CMC president Meenakshi Madhav appealed to the public to maintain cleanliness in and around their surroundings. She added  that water stagnates on low-lying areas in Udupi aiding breeding of mosquitoes.

Meenakshi Madhav said that open defecation should be checked and citizens should segregate garbage at source. DHO Dr Rohini said that 74,000 households have been identified for Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight. Anganwadi and Asha workers will visit households to distribute ORS packets. If children below the age of five years are found suffering from diarrhoea, they will be given zinc tablets.

In Dakshina Kannada : There is a need to create awareness on cleanliness among the general public to check diarrhoea, Mulki TMC president Sunil Alva opined.

At the Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight programme organised by the department of health and family welfare, women and child development department and Mulki TMC at Lingappayyana Kadu on Monday, RCHO Dr Ashok said that diarrhoea is one of the reasons for death in children below five years. On an average, 14 children out of 100 kids, die of diarrhoea, he said.

He said Asha workers, anganwadi workers and junior health assistants will create awareness among schoolchildren about the importance of hand wash.  Mangaluru taluk health officer Dr Naveen Kulal said there has been an increase in contagious diseases in Lingappayya Kadu.  Residents should give priority to cleanliness, he said.
