Ududi, April 25, 2016: The Udupi City Municipal Council CMC, is all set to revise trade licence fee with a slab system at its general body meeting here on Apr 23,  Saturday. The decision was taken despite objection from the opposition BJP.

Earlier, raising the issue, Amrita Krishnamurthy (Congress), councillor, said the decision was taken when the CMC was being run by the Deputy Commissioner as its Administrator.   The decision was not taken after consulting the Council.

Impact on trade:  The hike will affect traders in the city. Public objections to the move had not been called for before imposing the hike, Amrita Krishnamurthy (Congress), councillor said.  She was supported by BJP councillors Herga Dinakar Shetty, S.P. Kudwa and Yashpal Suvarna, who, termed the hike as arbitrary.

Intervening, D. Manjunathayya, CMC Commissioner, said there had been no hike in the trade licence fee for the last 27 years.  Smaller Urban Local Bodies such as Town Municipal Councils of Kundapur and Karkala, and even the Town Panchayat of Saligrama had increased their trade licence fees in the district.

The Udupi CMC was only following these bodies. A hike in the fee was long overdue and it would bring Udupi CMC on par with other ULBs in the district. Besides he himself had held talks with a delegation of about 150 traders and businessmen on this issue recently and convinced them about the need for the revision of the trade licence fee and they were convinced.

Notices   : The revision of the fees had been put on the notice board of the CMC and public objections had been called. But no one had filed any objection to it.  The CMC was going in for a slab system of revision of the fee which would be beneficial for the small traders and businessmen.

The decision to revise trade licence fee had been made three years back but was not implemented,  Manjunathayya said.  But the BJP councillors remained unrelenting.

Meenakshi Bannanje, CMC President, said if there were any genuine cases where some small traders were unable to pay the fee, she would consider.  But the move to revise the fee would not be rescinded, she said.  Finally the resolution to revise the trade licence fee was passed after recording the objection of the BJP.
