Tipu Jayanti, BJP questions Govt

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Oct 28,2016: Addressing a rally at the DC’s office in Manipal, BJP State Other Backward Classes Morcha President B Puttaswamy has asked why is the state government adamant on observing Tipu Jayanti despite severe opposition from most of the people.  He told media here, “If the government observes Kabir Jayanti and Abdul Kalam Jayanti, we will support it. But Tipu Jayanti is opposed by all.”

“Backward class people constitute 25-60% of the voters in the state and have the strength to change the political scene. Yeddyurappa, as chief minister, had provided Rs 383 crore to support members of Backward Classes involved in their hereditary occupations; 194 new hostels were built and financial support was provided for the development of Vishwakarma, Ganiga communities,” he explained.  He said students of Backward Classes have not received any scholarship from the government. The work on the Ganga Kalyana scheme and the Morarji Desai residential schools has remained stagnant, he charged.

“The government has borrowed Rs 70,000 crore in the last three years. In spite of irregularities in Irrigation Department, the government has not acted. The members of the Backward Classes have lost hope in the state government,” he stated.
Puttaswamy accused the state government of trying to siphon about Rs 500 crore to construct a steel flyover in Bengaluru to fund the next Assembly election.

B J Puttaswamy said the sand mining issue has resulted in loss of source of livelihood for many. “Workers are taking the extreme step of committing suicide. The government should at least design an appropriate sand policy and a separate policy for the coastal districts. There is no meaning in imposing a ban on sand which is naturally available,” he added.

MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary challenged the government to resolve the complications pertaining to sand mining within three days.  He supported the demand for a separate sand policy for coastal districts.

The agitators tried laying siege to the DC’s office. ADC Anuradha intervened and received the memorandum from them.
