Mangaluru, Aug 29, 2016: Briefing media, Principal Dr Sathish Kumar Shetty said  Besant Women’s College will organise a cleanliness drive at Thota Bengre in Mangaluru on September 10 and 11 as part of its outreach programme.   The college has adopted Thota Bengre for its programme. The drive will be initiated jointly by the college, MCC, Mangalore City Corporation, Bengre Mahajana Sabha and Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Programme at Thota Bengre, the place where rivers Nethravathi and Phalguni converge.

Principal Shetty said the place has become an eyesore due to the apathy of the public. It presents a depressing picture to walkers and residents due to vast quantity of waste floating on it. Also, non-recycled debris, comprising plastic bags and water bottles, has been causing inconvenience to the residents, he stated.

He said MLA J R Lobo will inaugurate the drive. Mayor Harinath will preside over the programme while District In-Charge Minister B Ramanath Rai, MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer and Health, Education and Social Justice Standing Committee President Kavitha Sanil will be the chief guests, he added.

He said the students will also create awareness among the general public on how not to dump waste to the rivers. Awareness will also be created for constructing toilets. Apart from this, the Home Science students wil create health awareness among the residents. On September 10, around 550 students and local residents will take part in the drive while on the second day, around 750 students and the residents will take part, he added.

Bengre Mahajana Sabha President Chetan Bengre said the need for public toilets at the place is seen as a large number of workers population reside in the region.  He said the Sabha has made arrangements for three boats to ferry students and volunteers. The MCC will give the students caps and gloves, he stated.
