Mangaluru, Aug 29, 2016:  The cabinet last week, decided to celebrate the birth anniversary of the social reformer, who rejected casteism and fought for social equality. A circular issued in this regard by P S Malathi, under secretary to the department of Kannada and culture, has a special mention of Brahmashri Narayana Guru Seva Samiti, Subhash Nagara, Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada.

For CM Siddaramaiah to decide on  celebrations for the Sri Narayana Guru Jayanti at all taluk and district headquarters in the state on September 16, it was an organization from Dakshina Kannada which was instrumental in pushing the government to take this decision.

In fact, the samiti had requested Siddaramaiah on April 21 to announce Sri Narayana Guru Jayanti as a state celebration in Karnataka. Siddaramaiah, in his speech, had promised that the demand would be considered positively.
As per government decisions, the department of Kannada and Culture has reserved Rs 69 lakh for celebrations in 176 taluk and 30 district headquarters. Samiti members led by Billava community leader Harikrishna Bantwal urged the government to include history of Narayana Guru in the curriculum of degree and post graduate courses.
