Udupi, Nov 22, 2015 :  Speaking media, District Taximen Association president Raghupathy Bhat said Association will be organising a huge protest rally on November 24 to condemn the lethargic approach of the officials in curbing the illegal affairs in the trade despite repeated appeals from the association.

A rally will begin from the office at Karavali Junction and reach DC’s office in Manipal. A memorandum would be submitted to him. The taxi and maxi cab service will be suspended on the day.

District Taximen Association president said the taxi and maxi cab trade is facing severe threat from unauthorised taxis and maxi cabs. Nearly 600 private taxisare into business. He added that there are no suitable taxi stations in the district to park the taxis and maxi cabs. The existing taxi stands in areas like Padubidri, Katpadi, Karavali Junction, Santhekatte, Brahmavar, Kota, Thekatte, Kundapur, Tallur, Hejamadi, Trasi, Nagoor and Byndoor facing demolition following the widening of the road.

He demanded that the Udupi DC should permit setting up of the taxi stands adjacent to the bus stops. Bhat said another problem is the government order to compulsorily attach the speed governor to the tourists’ taxis, wherein the speed limit would be maximum 60 km per hour.This would be a major setback for the taxi operators who are suffering a lot lacking income.

He said that the government order says even old vehicles on the verge of scrapping should be fitted with speed governor worth Rs 18,000. He added that the private buses with route permits take up private tours violating the rules and demanded stringent action against the private buses that indulge in the trade other the specified route permits. 

Bhat also said the autorickshaw drivers, who charge  beyond the prescribed limits, should be punished. He said the autorickshaws travel to distant areas and states and demanded that a color code should be implemented. He added all these problems have put taxi drivers in difficulty and have made them to struggle for livelihood.
