State to shut 35 colleges: says Minister Limbavali

Mangalore Today

Bangalore, Jan.23: Close on the heels of the Centre threatening to de-recognise six deemed universities in the State, the State government on Friday released a list of 35 unauthorised colleges and said that steps will be taken to close them down.

Among the colleges are M S Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies, M P Birla Institute of Management, Amity Global Business School and IIJT Finance.

Except two colleges, the rest are based in Bangalore and six are being run with foreign collaboration. Most of them offer courses in business management.

In fact, the Government in its order dated December 10, 2009 has already authorised Commissioner for Collegiate Education to inspect records, registers and other documents in these institutions and ascertain whether the programmes being conducted by them are approved by the competent authority.

Disclosing this to reporters, Higher Education Minister Aravind Limbavali said all these institutions were illegal as they had not taken any permission to function. “The department issued two notices to them, but they did not respond. Now we have no option but to close them down. If necessary, we will take the help of police for this purpose,” he stated.

He, however, said the department may consider giving them permission only if their infrastructure is found good and if they are imparting quality education.

Asked about the fate of students in these colleges, the Minister said the students have to be careful while joining such colleges. “If they (students) want a good career, they have to be careful. They have to crosscheck if a college is authorised or not before taking admission,” he added.

The Higher Education department has released Rs 8 crore towards reimbursing the additional fee paid by students while joining engineering courses under the Government quota in 2006-07.

The department has to reimburse a total of Rs 33 crore to 4,379 students. This is the first installment. All dues will be cleared within a few days. The money will be deposited to the bank account o f the students, Limbavali said.
