Six additional farm equipment hiring facilities in DK

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru:   The agriculture department has proposed to set up six more hiring centres for farm equipment to help farmers, besides the existing five centres on stream during 2015-16.  As per the plans, the agriculture department in Dakshina Kannada district will get  centres in Moodbidri, Surathkal in Mangaluru, Vittal in Bantwal taluk, Kadaba in Puttur taluk, Sullia in Sullia taluk and Kokkada in Belthangady taluk.

At present, five centres which were opened last year were managed by Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP). The centres are at Panja in Sullia taluk, Uppinangady in Puttur taluk, Panemangaluru in Bantwal taluk, Kuvettu in Belthangady taluk and Gurupura in Mangaluru taluk.

Agriculture department Joint Director informed that the centres will come up with approval from the State government. At the same time, tender has been invited at the state-level to name an NGO who will manage the centres.

According to demand from farmers of the region for farm equipment, the already existing centres will be equipped with additional equipment to cater to the needs of the farmers this year. Initially, the NGO will have to purchase equipment worth Rs 50 lakh per centre. While the State government would give Rs 37.50 lakh to each centre as subsidy. In the second year, the NGO will have to purchase equipment worth Rs 25 lakh and the government will provide 50% subsidy to each centre.

These additional facilities will help farmers to hire farm equipment within their areas and attend to works.

One farmer told this correspondent that existing centres have paddy harvesters which are not of much use to farmers in Dakshina Kannada as several farmers have small land holdings where they cultivate paddy. Small paddy harvester would be of great help to the farmers.  Farmers are of the opinion that each centre should have transport which will save on transportation.

The private hiring firms from other states come have paddy transplanter, paddy harvester and charge less ’hiring centres’.  Presently centres have paddy transplanter, paddy harvester, paddy crusher, combined harvester for paddy, machine to remove husk of arecanut, sprayers, power tillers and so on.
