Sites sought for landless needy

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, Nov 21, 2015: The Karnataka Prantha Kooli Karmikara Sangha, Udupi, staged a protest in front of the municipality demanding sites for landless needy.

Speaking on the occasion, Venkatesh Koni, the Udupi secretary of Karnataka Prantha Koolikarmikara Sangha, alleged that the City Municipal Councill (CMC) is ignoring the pathetic situation of the people who do not have proper shelter.

He said as many as 2,461 applications have been forwarded to the tahsildar, but in vain.
He demanded that the first phase of the list comprises 457 applicants coming under the CMC. The list should be processed immediately, he urged.

The illegal encroachments should be removed and the land should be distributed among the poor who do not have shelter, he said. 280.67 acres of land has been illegally encroached by 985 people in 25 villages in Udupi hobli, he claimed.

He said the assistant commissioner has earmarked 1.91 acres of land to the homeless needy. The area comes under the CMC. The condition put forth before the CMC is that the land allocated should be used by two years for the purpose. However, it is almost two years since the allocation of land and the CMC has not taken any initiative. The land will be taken back by the government, he said.

Koni charged that Rs 500 is collected from homeless needy through the Urban Development Authority. It is totally injustice that the CMC is now ignoring the demands of the homeless needy, he criticised.

The protest was staged in front of CMC Commissioner Manjunathayya. He said that the government is taking all efforts to provide sites to the homeless needy. The list is shortlisted and the process will be completed shortly, he added.

Police intervention was sought as the protesters were not entitled to protest before CMC. The rule says that the protesters can only stage a protest in front of the DC’s and taluk offices. About six protesters were arrested and they were release later.
