Sessions court sentences man in sexploitation case

June 24, 2016: It is reported that the Sixth Additional District and Sessions Court on June 23, Thursday sentenced a 38-year-old man from a village near Belthagady to four months of imprisonment upon finding him guilty of having consensual sex with a 20-year-old woman by falsely promising to marry her.

As per  charge sheet filed by Puttur Rural police, it is said that when the victim was alone in the house on a particular day in the last week of January 2014, the accused Maila alias Mailappa called the woman, who is his neighbour and had sex with her. Maila had sex with her two more times and asked her not to tell anybody about the incident and promised to marry her. On knowing she became pregnant, he avoided her.

Subsequently, to hide the matter she left home she went as a domestic help at a house in Bantwal. Her father filed a missing complaint with the police and a news in this regard had appeared in newspapers. The victim’s employer read the news and handed over her to the police, when she revealed the truth. The victim gave birth to a baby boy on September 26, 2014. A DNA test of both Maila and the baby boy was conducted, which confirmed the child was his.

Public Prosecutor Judith O M Crasta examined 28 witnesses. Judge D T Puttarangaswamy acquitted Maila on charges of rape as he found it to be a case of two adults having consensual sex. But he sentenced Maila to four months imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs 10,000 as he found him guilty of cheating and Rs 40,000 as compensation to the child.
