Samaga Award conferred on harikatha artiste Bhadragiri Achyuthdas

Mangalore, Jan 30: Bhadragiri Achyuthdas, who is well-known for his rendering of harikathas, has been selected to receive the Malpe Shankaranarayana Samaga Award instituted by the Kalkura Foundation. 

District-in-charge Minister Krishna J Palemar will confer the award on Bhadragiri Achyuthdas at a programme, which will be held at Town Hall on Sunday. Kabbinale Vasanth Bharadwaj, a senior scholar, will deliver the felicitation speech. A Yakshagana talamaddale will precede the awards function.

Pradeep Kumar Kalkura told press people at a press conference organized on Thursday that the award is named in honor of Shankara Narayana Samaga or Dodda Samaga, who is highly acclaimed as a Yakshagana and harikatha artiste. The award includes a citation, a gold medal, a bowl of fruits, a shawl, and a memento. 

Bhadragiri Achyuthdas, born in Bhadragiri of Udupi, is widely acclaimed as a great composer of devotional songs. He co-founded the Dashashrama Harikatha Institute at Bangalore. He has been a harikatha artiste for more than 50 years and has rendered katha keerthans with great devotion. 

Matti Subba Rao, Sheni Gopalakrishna Bhat, and Perla Krishna Bhat were the previous recipients of the Samaga Award.
