SSF condemns implement ’Uniform Civil Code’ to hold agitation in city

Mangalore Today News Network

Oct 22, 2016: SSF, Sunni Students Federation  national general secretary K M Siddiq Montugoli in Mangaluru, urged that the government should not make attempt to deny the constitutional rights of the people. "Freedom of religion is a fundamental right which the Constitution of India ensures every citizen. Hence, the government should not try to deny the right through the implementation of Uniform Civil Code," Siddiq told media in Mangaluru.

He said that the Right to Freedom of Religion in India ensured under Articles 25 and 26 of the Constitution are above the Directive Principles of State Policy. "The implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, which is mentioned as only one of the directive principles in the Constitution, snatches the fundamental rights. Those who are in power should stop attempts of putting minority in apprehension through Uniform Civil Code, which is a direct attack on religion freedom of Muslims. Hence, the Central Law Commission should withdraw the affidavit filed in the court," Siddiq said.

The Constitution of India has allowed Muslims to follow Shariat Law only for personal issues related to marriage and divorce. All other remaining rules in India are applied to Muslims too, he said. "Triple talak and polygamy mentioned in Shariat have several conditions and restrictions. It is not a practical idea to implement Uniform Civil Code in a country where thousands of castes and communities live in a country of diversity," he opined.

He warned that the Sunni Coordination Committee will launch agitations in democratic way to oppose the move of implementing Uniform Civil Code.
