Road transport dept rejects to reply on illegal private operations

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, August 13, 2017: In a case road transport department has refused to provide information under the Right To Information (RTI) Act with regard to steps taken by it to curb illegal operation of private tourist and stage carriage buses on nationalised routes.

A  consumer rights activist had filed an application stating over 3,000 private buses in both categories have been causing over Rs. 3 crore loss to the four State road transport corporations — KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and NEKRTC. He wanted to know the action taken by the department to curb such illegal operations.

Member of the public  Bhat made a statement that private tourist buses were not sticking to the permitted pick-up and drop-off points, and instead operating like regular buses, causing huge revenue loss to RTCs. Similarly, private stage carriage buses were operating on nationalised routes, affecting RTCs’ earnings and creating losses.

Transport Department in its reply, told  Bhat that the details sought by him do not come under the definition of “information.”
