Reconsider move to ban vehicles from Car Street: Congress

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, Jan 25: The Udupi Block Congress Committee recently submitted a memorandum to the DC, pointing out the various flaws in the district administration’s decision to ban vehicles from Car Street.

While the memorandum accepted that making Car Street a vehicle-free zone will give maximum protection to the Shri Krishna Mutt Temple, it also brought attention to the fact that the weak, the infirm, the old, and the disabled will find it very difficult to access the temple. Moreover, various thriving businesses along Car Street will be forced to shut down. The move will also have an adverse effect on taxi and autorickshaw drivers as well as the residents of Car Street.

Since vehicles have already been banned from almost 40 percent of Car Street, there is no need to make the entire street a vehicle-free zone, stated Diwarkar Kundar, the president of the Udupi Block Congress Committee.
