Sep 27, 2016: Reports indicate that a class IX girl student, who suffered injuries due to corporal punishment at an English Medium School in Venur in Belthangady taluk, has been shifted to Government Wenlock Hospital in the city after her condition to a turn for the worse, on Sept 26,Monday.


It is alleged she was assaulted by her headmaster and was receiving treatment at a Government Hospital in Belthangady. The girl’s parents shifted her to Wenlock Hospital after she started vomiting blood on Sept 26,  Monday.   Childline Mangaluru co-ordinator Sampath Katti told  media the decision to shift her to Mangaluru was taken after she suffered chest pain and vomited blood.
Childline’s Katti said the girl had suffered injuries on her head after the headmaster of the school allegedly beat her. As a result, she had five stitches on her head and a blood clot was also found on her hand. It was revealed during preliminary investigation that she was beaten on earlier occasion too, but no complaint had been lodged as both the parties ended in a compromise, he said. The latest incident occurred on September 23 between 10pm and 12 midnight.

The student hails from poor family of Kerala and her parents cannot speak Kannada. The girl lives in the school hostel. It is also alleged that several students from the hostel are also beaten up. The Childline that received the information on Sept 24, Saturday have informed the police so that the girl’s statement is recorded at Venur police station, he added.
