Mar 13, 2018: Chief Whip of the state government in Legislative Council Ivan D’Souza said the total cost of Pashchima Vahini project is Rs 1,394 crore.  Under the first phase, 53 works will be taken up in Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts at a cost Rs 200 crore, he told media persons here. He said that he had raised the Pashchima Vahini issue during the recently concluded legislature session.

MLC D’Souza said Minister T B Jayachandra informed the Legislative Council that the much-talked-about project under which a series of vented dams or check dams will be built to augment water during summer in three coastal districts. Despite heavy rainfall in the three districts, they are facing an unprecedented water crisis during summer, he said.

He said that the construction of vented dams under the scheme will not only mitigate water crisis, but also help in recharging the groundwater table. In 53 works, a total of 845 mcft water can be stored. In the first phase, 29 works worth Rs 56 crore will be taken up in Uttara Kannada, 14 works will be carried out in Udupi district at a cost of Rs 52 crore and 10 works will be implemented in Dakshina Kannada district at a cost of Rs 91 crore, he explained. The minister said that a comprehensive project report has been prepared in this regard.

Second and third phases

In the second phase, Rs 611 crore will be sanctioned and in the third phase, 583 crore will be provided. As the wooden planks used for vented dams to store water gets spoiled within two years, a new technology of fibre planks will be used instead of wooden planks, he stated.

MLC D’souza said Udupi district has 257 vented dams while that number is 212 in Dakshina Kannada and 278 in Uttara Kannada districts. However, they have become defunct due to lack of wooden planks. The state government has announced an additional Rs 100 crore to repair these old vented dams, he added.

Narcotic drug cases  :  On the sale of narcotic drugs and their consumption in Dakshina Kannada district, D’Souza said in 2016, 239 cases with 306 suspects were registered in Mangaluru Police Commissionerate jurisdiction and conviction has been made in 65 cases.

In 2017, 278 cases with 401 suspects were registered and conviction has been made in 45 cases. While in Dakshina Kannada police jurisdiction, 16 cases with 33 persons were registered in 2016 and 25 cases with 46 suspects were registered in 2017.

Among the suspects, 448 are below 35 years old and four were women, he added.
