Udupi, Jan 15, 2018: Udupi is in Paryaya preparation mode; celebrations of Palimaru Mutt seer Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha Swami, who will ascend the Paryaya Peetha for the second time on January 18.

Palimaru Mutt reception committee working president Balaji Raghavendra Acharya said the procession will have more than 80 folk and cultural tableaux. The incoming seer will felicitate the outgoing pontiff Vishwesha Theertha Swami of Pejawar Mutt, in Durbar. The felicitation is usually held as part of the ritual at the previous day’s celebrations and not in Durbar. “The Palimaru seer wants to show respect to the veteran seer and has written the citation for the senior seer himself,” he added.

The Car Street will be decorated for the event. The procession will begin at Jodukatte, the traditional entrance of at 3 am on January 18. The Palimaru Mutt seer, pontiffs of the other Mutts and the presiding diety of the Mutt would be taken in a grand procession.

The seer would adorn the Paryaya Peetha at 6.35 am, on Jan 18,  after which he will participate in the Durbar. The seer will then perform the first pooja to Lord Krishna with Tulasi petal. The occasion will mark the inaugural of nonstop Bhajan for all the days and nights of the two-year Paryaya. The mass dining would start for the devotees after the rituals. The inauguration of religious discourse will start the same evening.

Union Minister Anant Kumar Hegde, district in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj, former minister P G R Sindhia and MP Shobha Karandlaje will be present.

Acharya said the seer would offer golden cover for the sanctum sanctorum. The seer plans to instal an idol of Lord Hanuman in Indraprastha (Delhi) during his two-year tenure. The celebration would be telecast live on six LED screens at Durbar hall.

Puttige seer to stay away  :  Puttige Mutt Sugunendra Theertha Swami would stay away from the Paryaya celebrations. His presence has been opposed by a few seers of the Ashta Mutts since the former has done ‘Sagarollanghana’ (crossing the sea). It is said he is currently in New Jersey planning for constructing a new temple in Russia.

Carrying palanquin  ;  The incoming seer would be brought in the palanquin carried by devotees during the procession.

According to the reception committee, the seer is keen not to break the tradition and the palanquin would be carried by the devotees. It is an age-old tradition wherein the incoming Paryaya seer is carried all through the procession from Jodukatte to Sri Krishna temple in the palanquin. The outgoing seer Vishwesha Theertha Swamji had adopted the new tradition by traveling on a chariot attached to the truck in the procession.
