Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, June 29, 2016: Though 40 cases of dengue have been registered since June 17, Health Department officials are saying that the numbers are on a downward trend. While 225 positive cases of dengue were reported till June 17, the number increased to 261 cases between then and June 27.

The number of cases of suspected dengue deaths rose to six.

Dengue cases have seen a sharp rise in Dakshina Kannada and other parts of the State since the first week of June, with the onset of monsoon.

Though the Health Department has repeatedly issued circulars not to get concerned, people did get anxious following reports of deaths of patients who tested positive for dengue.

In the first week of June, there were four deaths of persons who tested positive for dengue in the district. There were two cases of suspected dengue death in the last 10 days in Bantwal and Kadaba.

All these six death cases will be reviewed by the district committee headed by District Surgeon H. Rajeshwaridevi and a report will be sent to the State Death Audit Committee.

District Disease Surveillance Officer B.V. Rajesh said that incidence of dengue was reducing as only a few cases have been reported in the last one week. “Except for a few new cases (in Puttur, Bantwal and Belthangady), the other patients are undergoing treatment,” he said. Dr. Rajesh said that there have been many cases of influenza-like illness and respiratory problems, generally seen during monsoon.

Awareness drive

Dr. Rajesh said that the Health Department personnel are continuing to visit places from where positive cases of dengue are being reported. Personnel will now carry out vector control measures. People are being advised to use mosquito coils, repellents and take such other steps to protect themselves from mosquito bite. On Monday, this exercise was carried out in Bantwal, Rai and Vamapadavu, he said.
