Oil removed from Asian Forest tankers

Oil removed from Asian Forest tankers

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Jan 31: The oil has been completely removed from the 9 tankers of “Asian Forest,” the vessel that sank in the Arabian Sea near Ullal in July, last year.

Smith Salvage Company, Singapore, successfully carried out the oil-removal operation. The London offshore consultants supervised the salvage work and submitted an authority letter to the district administration about the successful completion of the salvage work.

When the ship sank, its captain had informed the district administration that the tankers contain 400 metric ton of oil. However, the Smith Company has salvaged only 266 metric ton of oil. Could the rest of the oil have leaked into the ocean?

Since the ship has sunk on an international route, it has to be lifted out as early as possible; otherwise, it might create problems for the other vessels navigating along the route. The district administration has retained the ship’s master and chief officer and has released the other 16 members of the crew. The Panambur police have also registered a case against the ship’s company as well as the master and chief officer of the ship, hoping that this will pressurize the company to remove the wreck completely.
