New building at Lady Goschen not expected to be ready before August 2015

Mangalore Today News Network

MANGALURU: People from poor sections dependent on the more than century and half Government Lady Goschen Hospital in the city, are not expected to get relief until August 2015 it is clear.  The main portion of the hospital was demolished in 2011 when a donor offered Rs 18 crore for the construction of a new multi-storied building during the BJP government.  The then chief minister BS Yeddyurappa laid the foundation stone for the new block in April 2011. Subsequent political situation stalled the project implementation.

Work was re-started later at a slow pace. Completion dates were extended several times and the last deadline given to the contractor was December 2014. However, due to technical reasons, construction stalled again. The hospital is the sole ray of hope for hundreds of poor women patients, especially pregnant women, from more than five districts in the area. The new building, which is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 21.7 crore, is expected to have 275 beds and state-of-the-art facilities. The 12,000 square feet building will have five floors. The new building has the capability to handle up to 25 childbirths daily. Construction has been facilitated by corporate social responsibility initiatives undertaken by the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), an Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) company.

Lady Goschen Hospital’s superintendent, Shakunthala MM, said the new hospital building will be ready for occupation around July.  The deadline to complete the work has been extended to July. At present, the work is progressing, though there were some delays earlier. The contractor has agreed to complete the work by July. The construction work of four floors has been completed and fifth floor is underway.

M Veerappa Moily, MP and former Union minister visited the hospital construction site recently and said that MRPL is not the reason for the delay in work.   "The company has already released funds and no payments are pending. I have asked the contractor to expedite works and they have agreed to complete it by July," Moily said.
