Mangaluru: Media reports say, Shubham Agarwal, a final-year student of BTech (Mining Engineering) at the National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, (NITK) in Surathkal, had a life time experience. He was part of a distinguished group of 17 students from NITs across the country  guests at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. As part of the ’In Residence’ programme for students, an effort by President Pranab Mukherjee to open up the Presidential palace to the public.  Agarwal said that NITK director Swapan Bhattacharya who told me about this and informed me that the institute is submitting my name.

I received a call from the Rashtrapati Bhavan informing me that I have been selected for the programme and I just could not believe my ears. Later, I received an email from the Prez office  explaining details of the programme. It was is deed an extraordinary thing for me.  I had never imagined that I would be chosen for the opportunity to interact with our rashtarpathi.  Agarwal hails from Uttar Pradesh and he is the son of Sunil Agarwal, an IPS officer currently serving as IGP North Eastern range in Kalaburagi. He studied at the National Public School, Rajajinagar in Bengaluru.

According to the website of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the ’In-Residence’ programme encourages creative and innovative people and help open up the Bhavan for greater participation and involvement of the common man in its activities. The Innovation Scholars In-Residence programme was launched in December 2013. Online applications are invited from interested applicants through the website of the President of India. All Indian nationals who have a track record of innovation and implementation of innovative ideas are eligible. A committee screens  the applicants and shortlists names for selection as ’Innovation Scholar In-Residence,’  The initiative was aimed at giving the students exposure to the overall functioning of the Bhavan, especially changes such as e-governance and infrastructure it is learnt. It will give an exposure to the overall functioning of the President and his office. It will provide an opportunity to understand the functioning of the government and interact with top bureaucrats.

Shubham said that he has a placement, will pursue the job and meanwhile will definitely write the civil service examination in future.   On general interests  he said that he is interested in sports and follows political activities at international level. Travelling and reading books of great personalities is his special love.
