Mulky Bundh, demands for taluk status intensified

Mangalore Today News Network

Mulki, Dec 30: The Mulki Taluk Matthu Nyayalaya Horata Samithi called for a Mulky bundh in order to intensify demands for the status of taluk for Mulki.

All business establishments remained closed and buses did not ply. The roads were deserted; and the highway was blocked for a few hours. Private buses plying to Mulki and Kinnigoli from Mangalore did not ply because of the bundh. The express buses began plying late in the evening.

Dinesh Ulepadi, the leader of the Samithi, said that all 32 villages in Mulki hobli observed the bundh. In spite of the people’s demands for taluk status for Mulki, the government plans to create a new Mulki hobli by adding it to Paduva Moodabidri Taluk.

He said that Mulki was an important coastal center, which had a port, a court, along with PWD, excise, and customs offices. The moffusil court remained functional from 1863 to 1900. Mulki even had a police station. All these facilities were withdrawn after Independence. Ulepadi said that the people of Mulki have been demanding Taluk status for the past 30 years; and all the political parties have been consistently neglecting this demand.

The Samithi submitted a memorandum to DC V Ponnuraj, who turned it over to Chief Minister of Karnataka B S Yeddiyurappa.
