M R Ravi, chief executive officer, Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat told reporters on Dec 19, Tuesday that the agriculture department has decided to hold such fairs in select districts in the run up to the International Millets Mela at Bengaluru in January to popularize organic food and millets among the masses. While there is already a growing awareness about these organic food and millets, this endeavour will help provide the much needed market linkage to the growers.

Minister for agriculture Krishna Byre Gowda will inaugurate the two-day fair, Kempe Gowda H, joint director, department of agriculture said. District minister B Ramanath Rai will inaugurate the exhibition stalls. Minister for youth empowerment and sports Pramod Madhwaraj will release a brochure on various products of millets and MLA J R Lobo will preside. The official said nearly 2,000 farmers will take part in the two-day meet.

While the Savayava Bhagya scheme of the department has kindled the spirit of growing organic food stuff among farmers, they hitherto were on the backfoot or had lost interest to continue given the absence of an assured market, he said. Citing the example of a group of around 60 organic growers in Soorinje, Kempe Gowda said only five were active in the absence of assured markets. The fair intends to change the scenario for these and other growers in the state, he said.

With provisions for 50 stalls, space will also be provided to set up food stalls for those preparing food items from millets, he said. A seminar on the usefulness of millets will be held post the inaugural as well as a discussion on value addition of organically-grown food items. There will also be a live demonstration on preparation of millet-based food on December 24, he said. For registrations, call: 8277931061, 8277931063.
