Migrant workers kids cared for in Make shift school

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, July 3, 2015: More than 30 children of migrant workers, working in construction companies  are  given knowledge of the three Rs  at a tent school at Yedthady village, about 19 km from Udupi, by two visiting foreigners.

Mostly hailing from Andhra/Telangana parents bring the children to the ’school’.  An NGO  called ’FSL India’  do this work.   Inga Behring (19), from Bielefeld in Germany and Angela Garlia (37), from Cork in Ireland, on an exchange programme.   While  Behring has been teaching at the school for the last 10 months, Garlia has been here for two months. Though either of them did not know Telugu or Kannada, they have picked up words and are able to communicate with children, the youngest of whom is about a year old.

They teach from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and afterwards they go to Kundapur, where they stay. They also participate in meetings and they are helped by Shalini Saranga and Geeta C., both coordinators, who also teach along with them.

The students are taught English alphabets, numerals, basic mathematics, nursery rhymes and personal hygiene. One of them said that it was difficult to understand the language. But now it is easier. Children pick up the subjects fast generally but it takes time. Teaching and friendly actions go a long way.

One of them, Garlia,  used to work in an American company in Ireland and taught cooking there. She said it is an amazing experience. May not be able to teach them much in the next six months. But it is important to show them we  care.  The children are good at learning but get distracted quickly, but  are eager to learn.

The children are at the spot for about 10 months. After that most of the migrant workers go back to their homes.   Some return, some do not. Our aim is to give them basic education so that they can later join schools.  The  students were all gald to be in this make shift school.
