Bangalore, January 18: The Upparapet police have arrested a man from Shivaji Nagar for allegedly gang-raping and cheating a woman.

The arrested is Kalam, a private manpower agent. The victim, a 33-year-old widow, who hails from rural Mangalore, was brought to Bangalore on Oct 31 by the men who said that they would procure a maid’s job for her in Saudi Arabia. Kalam and his friends Ismail and Shafi confined the woman to a room in Hindustan Lodge near Majestic Theatre and gang-raped her for 3 days.

Later, she informed journalists that the men would have sex with her ten times per day. She said that she resisted initially, but gave in because they assured her that they would get her a high-paying job, which would help her support her son.

Three days later, Kalam sent her to Mangalore, assuring her that he would call her when her travel documents were ready. Pramila returned home, but did not discuss her traumatic experience with her relatives.

A week later, Latif went to Mangalore to escort her to Bangalore. Baba, an associate of Kalam, took her to Lucknow airport, extorted Rs 65,000 from her and gave her some papers, which he claimed to be travel documents. After taking the money, Baba left her at the airport. Later, the airport authorities informed her that the documents were faked. She had to sell her nose ring in order to purchase a ticket home.

When she finally told the story to her relatives, they encouraged her to lodge a complaint at the police station on Jan 12.

R Prakash, sub-inspector of Upparapet Police Sation, is in charge of the case. Calling the incident “disturbing,” he said that the main accused has been arrested and that the others, who are now absconding, will be caught soon.
