Man judged guilty in wife’s death, sentence Dec 18

Mangaluru, Dec 17, 2017: The sixth additional district and sessions court has held the accused in a dowry death case guilty. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced against Devi Kumar alias Sunil, 38, a resident of Kaniccharu, Kanyana in Bantwal, on Monday.

The court has held Sunil responsible for the death of his wife Savitha, hailing from Hirebail, Mudigere in Chikkamanagaluru, just eight months into the marriage. She was 27. The couple entered wedlock on June 3, 2013.

Devi Kumar was an alcoholic and used to allegedly torture his wife to get dowry every night after consuming liquor. It was alleged that he had also threatened to kill her and on February 20, 2014, night, he strangulated her to death. A case in this connection had been registered at the Vittal police station. Rashmi Paraddi, the then DySp of Bantwal, had submitted the chargesheet to the court.

The judge, D T Puttaranga Swamy of the sixth additional district and sessions court, held Devi Kumar guilty under section 498(A) (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC and Section 4 of the Dowry Prevention Act.
