Mangaluru, Jan 19,2017: The VI Additional District and Sessions Judge D.T. Puttaranagawamy recently sentenced a 36-year-old man to three years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty of abetment of the suicide of a 28-year-old woman. According to the chargesheet by the Uppinangady police, Geeta, a resident of Koukradi village in Puttur, was found dead in a pond on January 7, 2013.

The next day her brother filed a complaint stating that his sister slipped and fell into the pond.

An officer, during the course of his investigation, found a note, reportedly by Geeta, wherein she said that she had a physical relationship with Shivaram, a relative, who promised to marry her. In the note, she added that her family were not aware of the relationship.

The autopsy report also said that Geeta was seven months pregnant.

Testing of DNA samples proved that Shivaram was the biological father. Shivaram was arrested and charged under Sections 306 (abetting commission of suicide), 376 (Rape) and 417 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.

While acquitting Shivaram of the charge of rape, the Judge found him guilty for the offence under Section 306.

Apart from the imprisonment, he was also directed to pay Rs. 12,000 as fine. He was also sentenced to three months imprisonment for cheating.

From the fine, the court directed Shivaram to pay Rs. 8,000 to the mother of Geeta.

The judge has directed the District Legal Services Authority to consider Geeta’s mother for payment of compensation under the Victim Compensation Scheme.
