Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, June 24, 2016: The Sixth Additional District and Sessions Court here on Thursday sentenced a 38-year-old man from a village near Belthagady to four months imprisonment in a case wherein the man had sex with a 20-year-old woman on the promise of marrying her, but later went back on his word.

Judge D.T. Puttarangaswamy acquitted the man, Maila alias Mailappa, of charges of rape as he found it to be a case of two adults having consensual sex. The judge, however, sentenced him to undergo four months imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 10,000 as he found him guilty of cheating. The judge directed Maila to pay Rs. 40,000 as compensation to the child. He has also directed the District Legal Services Authority to pay compensation to the woman as per Karnataka Victim Compensation Scheme.

In January 2014, when the woman’s parents had gone out to work, Maila called the woman, who was his neighbour’s daughter, got her to the latter’s backyard and raped her, the police said. He promised to marry her in the next few days. He raped her on two more occasions on the same promise. When she became pregnant, the woman called Maila, who asked her to have her own way and not bother him. The woman left her house without telling parents and began working as a domestic help at a house in Bantwal. Her parents filed a missing complaint with Puttur Rural police, which was published in some newspapers.

The owner of the house in Bantwal produced her before the police on August 3, 2014.
