Main pipelines damaged, city water supply collapses, being restored

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Aug 03, 2015:   Mangaluru city and surrounding areas has been plagued without water following damage to two main pipelines from Netravathi River since Aug 1,  it is said water supply is likely to resume in parts of the city from Monday Aug 3,  following repair of one of the main lines. Two pipelines located on  marshy land, one measuring 1,100 mm dia and other measuring 1,000 mm dia, were broken near Kannur.

MCC Mangaluru City Corporation engineers were slow  to exactly locate the leakage due to the marshy nature of the land. Aug 2 evening, the 1,000 mm pipe was repaired and MCC resumed pumping water to Bendur underground reservoir.

Normal water supply may be expected in areas catered to by this reservoir by Aug 3 morning, which include Panambur, Surathkal, Katipalla, Krishnapura, Mukka, Kadri, Balmatta, Kodical, Kuroor, Kavoor and other central parts of Mangaluru. However, the 1,100 mm dia pipeline is said to be laid deeper in the earth and the repair work started only on Sunday. The pipeline, feeding  Padil underground reservoir, is expected to be restored Aug 3, Monday evening. Hence, areas getting water from Padil reservoir, which include Yekkur, Attavara, Mangaladevi, Jeppu, Jeppinamogaru, Padil, Bajal, and surrounding areas are expected to get normal water supply Aug 3 or 4 morning.
