MCJ students to go on hunger strike after syndicate meeting

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Jan 22: The students of Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) have been staging a protest against Prof M P Umeshchandra from the past 4 days. Now, they say that they will go on a hunger strike after the syndicate meeting.

Deepti Nayan, a student leader, said that the vice chancellor had promised to give a positive answer after holding a syndicate meeting on Jan 23, Saturday. She participated in a press conference at Press Club on Jan 22, Friday, and said that the students hope that the syndicate will make a decision in favor of the students, failing which the protestors will go on a hunger strike till the lecturer is removed from his post.

Allegedly, earlier the lecturer had forced students to sign a letter, which claimed that the news that had appeared in local papers was false. When students opposed this, he threatened that he would file a police complaint against them, they alleged.

The former VC’s silence regarding the matter and the negligence of the administration had blown the issue out of proportions. Santhosh, the president of the Post Graduate Students’ Union, said that the issue wouldn’t have gotten out of hand if the students’ complaints had been seriously considered by the administration.

Santhosh Joachim, the class representative of II MCJ; Ashwath Rao, the class representative of I MCJ; and Avinash, the secretary of the Post Graduation Students’ Union, were present at the press conference.
