Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Aug 30, 2014:  Mangalore City Corporation will seriously take its commitments for Mangalore city to ease its hurdles of railway gates related matters. Mayor Mahabala Marla released payment of centage charges to Southern Railway for construction of two road over bridges at Jeppu anticipating approval of the council.

The bridges lie between Nethravathi cabin and Mangalore central railway station at kms 883/6-7 and 883/3-4 and will be taken up on deposit work basis. While a sum of Rs 12.60-lakh was approved for ROB at kms 883/6-7, the mayor accorded approval for payment of Rs 11.60-lakh for ROB at kms 883/3-4.

The present ROBs at Jeppu that are almost parallel to each other and located around 200-metres away can handle two-way traffic. With corporation plans under way to upgrade roads leading to these bridges for four-lane traffic, the need to upgrade the ROBs to similar specification is vital.

Thanking the corporators for faith in him to sanction payment in anticipation of their approval at the council meeting on August 28, Mayor said understanding gravity of problems that residents of Jeppu-Kudpady face, the corporation has also set aside Rs 3 crore for construction of a road under bridge there. Total cost of the project is Rs 3.69 crore and the city corporation has already paid Rs 9 lakh as centage charges for the same, he said.

The much needed road under bridge in place of level crossing number 146-B, at Bajal  near Mangalore junction railway station for which union railway Minister DV Sadananda Gowda laid the foundation stone on August 16 too was facilitated with City Corporation contributing Rs 2.80 crore against estimated cost of Rs 5.61-crore. Marla said the civic body will find some source to pay the remainder Rs 69 lakh for the road under bridge at Jeppu-Kudpady.

Rail Minister D V S Gowda had assured residents of Bajal that the road under bridge there will be completed latest by February 2015 and that he has directed the authorities of Southern Railway to ensure its timely completion. Mayor said it will be irresponsible on part of the city corporation not to respond to woes of people who have been suffering for years due to absence of either a road over bridge or road under bridge at these places in the city.

The authorities concerned at this juncure should take urgent and serious note of the two serious hurdles to free passage and disturbance to residential and commercial areas in the heart of the city. One rail gate on the road to between Forum mall and Mangaladevi temple (near Srinivas College) and other on the Bolar road in Hoige Bazar. Early justice is needed to the suffering denizens, it was pointed out.
