Mangaluru , Dec 23, 2014: How about bidding adieu to 2014 and welcoming the New Year with a new skill – surfing, may be? If that sounds exciting, head to Mangaluru which is geared up to celebrate Karavali Utsav that offers to train you in surfing even if you are totally not exposed to it.

“If you know swimming and athletics you will master it in one day,” says president of Surfing Federation of India Kishor Kumar, who is offering the facility.

Beginning from Wednesday at 7.30 am at Sasihitlu, Mulki, about 20 km from here, it will go on till January 1. Batches of 10 enthusiasts will undergo three to four hours of training. He said there are enough boats and surfing boards.

It comes at a cost though – Rs. 2,200 a day per head. A three-day package costs Rs. 6,000. If you do not know swimming you may have to take a seven-day package. Contact 99024-33404 for details.

Beach festival

The beach festival at Panambur also features beach volleyball on Saturday and Sunday (9 a.m.), four-over beach cricket on Thursday (9 a.m.), boat race, sand art (Sunday 10 a.m.) and kite playing by Team Mangalore on December 28.

The Karavali Utsav beginning on Tuesday with a colourful procession, also offers cruise trips, kite-flying, beach volleyball, floodlight Kabaddi, coastal food festival, boat competition, besides a plethora of cultural programmes. Minister in charge of Dakshina Kannada B. Ramanath Rai reviewed the preparations on Monday.

The 10-day Karavali Utsav will take off on Tuesday with a colourful procession with 46 folk troupes and many tableaus being part of it. Starting at 2.30 p.m. from Nehru Maidan, the procession will pass through Hampankatta, P.V.S. Circle, and reach Karavali Grounds by 5.30 p.m. It will be flagged off by film and theatre director Sadananda Suvarna. Cultural events are scheduled in the evenings at Karavali Grounds and Kadri Park. Udayaraga programmes will be held at the park on Thursday and Sunday.
