KMC Attavar to hold Childhood Cancer Day, Feb 16, today

Mangaluru, feb 16, 2017: KMC, Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, on the occasion of the completion of 25 years, will observe International Childhood Cancer Day at Sanjeevini Hall, seventh floor, KMC Hospital, Attavar, at 10 am on February 16.

KMC pediatric hemato oncologist Dr Harsha Prasad said on Tuesday that children who are suffering from cancer as well as those who have fought cancer and emerged as cancer survivers will take part. The programme will be inaugurated by Mr India Runner-Up Alester D’Souza. Radio Jockey Errol Pinto will conduct various activities for children. A magic show will be conducted to entertain the children.

He said that in India, 40 to 50 thousand children are diagnosed with cancer. He said 20% of childhood cancer is found worldwide in India and the average cure rate is 40% to 50%. In developing countries, the survival rate is only 20% to 30%. Only two to three children out of 10, diagnosed with cancer, will survive. Therefore, there is a need to create awareness on the early diagnosis of cancer and the timely medical intervention, he said.
